LIFE is in Session
It has been about a year since I've produced this column; I needed the time off. It's 2007, and I'm back, refreshed and renewed. Hopefully I'm a little wiser and relevant, probably more whimsical, if that's possible, and yet simultaneously more practical. I'm still real and insightfully raw, conscientiously personal, politically engaged and spiritually committed. My desire is to share the best parts of my life's experiences, the lessons I'm learning and the observations I make along the way. Why? Because as a dear friend constantly says to me: “Life is in Session.”
Indeed, Life is in session and it does not begin or end with the dawning of the year if we are so blessed. With that in mind, my New Year's resolution is a continuous process. I am no longer interested in making short-lived declarations of grand intentions that set me up for failure if I fall short of loosing the ten pounds that I planned to have off by the end of 2006. Rather, I'm on a journey to be healthy – mentally, physically, and emotionally. This includes reducing stress, having more fun, being honest with myself and others, exercising consistently, and eating better. I'm also on a journey of liberation; committed to applying my gifts to improving the lives of my fellow Brothers and Sisters.
The turning of a New Year inevitably rings in a chorus of proclamations like “this is our year of prosperity,” and we repeat them and claim them as our own. Not a bad thing to embrace, right? I agree but since life is in session 24/7, I don't want my ability to prosper limited only to this year or only for one year, ya dig? These clichés often create false expectations. We end-up basing our progress on arbitrary illusions instead of committed life affirming missions.
For instance, when we think of prosperity, the first things that comes to mind are financial blessings. Trust me, I am all about financial blessings, but my desire to be wealthy ain’t about the illusion of hitting the Powerball this year. I'm more concerned, and I hope you are too, about building prosperity based on the basics – making smart moves and taking calculated risks – from rebuilding bad credit to maintaining good credit; from getting out of debt to saving more or from starting a business to making savvy business deals. This is not a year's work - this is a lifetime endeavor and I'm going to enjoy it because I've embraced the opportunity presented by knowing that Life is in Session 24/7.
The Session Continues…
It is a blessing to be on the continuum of life. My friend, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers (3 John 1: 2). Get and give all you can and keep it moving. I am certainly not against New Year's resolutions, but I've simply decided to make every moment count in this process called life. I don't want to take anything for granted, nor do I want to limit myself to a number – not age, not dollars nor years.
Happy New Year and Happy Life 2007 and Beyond…
